GATEKEEPER Project

Recent news:

On November 28, 2023, a meeting took place in Madrid summarizing the concluding GATEKEEPER project. During the meeting, the achievements of the project were emphasized, including the significant role envisaged for artificial intelligence and its modern applications in medicine. Below is a photo report from the meeting, attended by a team of scientists from the Department of Family Medicine.

The GATEKEEPER Project is one of the flagship European ventures aimed at the large-scale implementation of digital solutions, in particular artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data analysis in the area of health. This project, implemented as part of Horizon 2020 activities, will last 42 months (from October 2019 to March 2023). As many as 43 institutions from 13 European countries, active in the field of health, medical research and modern digital technologies take part in it. Among the project partners there are institutions, companies and organizations known for their innovativeness, such as Medtronic, Samsung, Hewlett Packard, HL7 International Foundation, ECHAlliance, and EIP on AHA. The only participant from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe among the project partners is a team of scientists from the Medical University of Lodz supervised by Prof. Przemysław Kardas, head of the Department of Family Medicine at MUL.

The direct goal of the Gatekeeper project is to create an open, free platform that is to become an arena for exchanging experiences and combining various ideas, technologies, needs and processes. They all have one common goal: to improve the health parameters of aging European societies. At the same time, Gatekeeper intends to introduce the next generation of innovations in the field of health care, including personalized solutions for assessing health risk, and enabling the application at the earliest possible stage of interventions to improve the effectiveness of treatment of chronic diseases.

The results of the Gatekeeper project will include innovations that directly reach around 40,000 European seniors. However, the impact of the project is not limited to this, as partners from Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan are already showing interest in using its results.

Polish scientists have important tasks to complete in the project. Under the guidance of prof. Kardas, who is an international expert in the field of non-compliance with therapeutic recommendations and polypharmacy, an application increasing the awareness of seniors in respect of adherence to medication in asymptomatic chronic diseases will be designed and put into use. Researchers from the Medical University of Lodz also hope to develop solutions that will reduce polypharmacy, which is a very serious problem for older people. Thanks to the Gatekeeper Project, their achievements will be made available to every senior, which will facilitate the management of multimorbid patients.
