Important dates in the history of Department of Family Medicine

1992 – creation of the Assembly for Family Doctors in Poland.
1992 – creation of College of Family Physician of Poland.
1993 – creation of Chairs and Departments of Family Medicine in Polish Medical Universities
1993 – Department of Family Medicine is created within the framework of Regional Postgraduate Education Centre of the Medical University of Lodz, co-ordinated by Prof. Bozydar Latkowski.

1994 – curriculum is compiled and teaching (lectures and tutorials) begins for students attending the 4^th year of studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Lodz.
1996 – Department of Family Medicine prepares a session concerning Medical Issues in Family Doctors’Practice within the framework of the 4^th International Rehabilitation and Handicapped People’s Equipment Fair in Lodz describing osteoporosis screening results of Municipal Health Centre (GOZ) population in Nowosolna.
1996 – Department of Family Medicine is one of the organisers of Polish-German Symposium entitled Didactics in Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Belchatow. In session entitled Postgraduate Teaching of Gynaecology and Obstetrics the special role of family doctors education in the fields of gynaecology and obstetrics is underlined.
1996 – A paper on the present and future students’education in Department of Family Medicine of Medical Academy in Lodz is presented on the 1st National Conference entitled Undergraduate Education in Family Medicine in Szczecin.

1998 – Chair of the Department Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska, PhD meets the Senator Elzbieta Plonka, a family doctor.

1998 – Prof. Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska publishes a script entitled Family Medicine (general part) for 5^th and 6^th year Medical Faculty students of the Medical University of Lodz.

1998 – Together with other institutions (Family Medicine Residents Society, College of Family Physician of Poland, Regional Family Doctors Education Centre of the Medical University of Lodz, Health Department of the City Council of Lodz ) the Department organises conference Perspectives for Family Medicine Development in Lodz.
1999 – Results of surveys conducted in the Department are presented in paper entitled Undergraduate Education in Family Medicine. Before tutorials only 4% of students declared willingness to specialise in family medicine, the tutorials increased interest not only in the subject of teaching but also in this medical speciality after graduating.

1999 – Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska, PhD confers P. Kardas doctoral dissertation.
1999 – Department of Family Medicine in Lodz is awarded grant for preparatory actions aiming at participation in the 5^th European Union Framework Programme by the National Research Committee (KBN).

1999 – representatives of the Department take part in a meeting of institutions intending to prepare a research-implementation project within the framework of the 5^th European Union Framework Programme organised in Athens.
1999 – The Department initiates research Project for preventing hospitalization in case of elderly inhabitants of Lodz within the framework of a grant awarded by Lodz City Council.

2000 – results of research conducted within the framework of Project for preventing hospitalization in case of elderly inhabitants of Lodz are presented on a conference entitled “Elderly people health needs and their conditioning” organised under the auspices of Department of Family Medicine of Medical University in Lodz and Lodz City Council for doctors of basic healthcare and other professionals involved in care for elderly people.

2000 – Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska, PhD confers K. Pietruszewska and M. Cwirko-Godycki doctoral dissertations
2001 – As a final outcome of the research Project for preventing hospitalization in case of elderly inhabitants of Lodz a monograph entitled Hospitalisations of elderly inhabitants of Lodz. Frequency, cause, prevention possibilities by P. Kardas and E. Ratajczyk-Pakalska is published

2001 – during the 1st Congress of Polish Family Medicine Association in Szczecin decisions concerning the organisation of the 2nd Congress in Lodz in 2002 are made
2002 – Head of the Department, Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska is granted the titled professor
2002 – on 9-11 May the 2nd Congress of Polish Family Medicine Association is held in Lodz. Prof. Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska, MD, PhD becomes the Chairperson of Congress Organising Committee

2002 – Prof. Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska is awarded “Hipocrates Statue” by Polish Family Medicine Association for her contribution to family medicine development.

2002 – launching NISAN research-implementation project, realised by the Department together with international partners in the framework of the 5th European Union Framework Programme.
2002 – Prof. Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska, PhD confers A. Kolacinska doctoral degree, prepared within the framework of Doctoral Studies Division of Department of Family Medicine of Medical University in Lodz.
2002 – Medical Academy of Lodz is officially transformed into Medical University of Lodz.

2002 – after Prof. Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska’s, retirement Przemyslaw Kardas, PhD is employed as the head of the Department.

2003 – launching NICMS research-implementation project, realised by the Department together with international partners in the framework of the 5th European Union Framework Programme.

2003 – Prof. Ewa Ratajczyk-Pakalska, PhD confers P. Klink doctoral degree, prepared within the framework of Doctoral Studies Division of Department of Family Medicine of Medical University in Lodz.

2004 – 3-4 February 2004 – Department has organized annual meeting of international partners involved in NICMS project. Thel meeting of international partners involved in NICMS project has summarized results obtained during the first year of the project and precise further activities.
